DESIGNING AN ADVERTISEMENT

by Alba Tobal.

Students have to create a public service announcement in small groups on the topic of pollution.

As a cross-curricular activity, students must:

  • Gather information.
  • Write a script.
  • Act out their roles.
  • Design props and backgrounds.
  • Understand the role of media.
  • And deliver a powerful science and health message.

Students can then present their public service announcements to other classes within the school to spread their message.

In this link https://www.storyboardthat.com/articles/e/public-service-announcements  students can create their own PSA, and teachers can find an example rubric and questions to discuss the effectiveness of the various elements.

GOOD NIGHT STORIES FOR REBEL GIRLS

shared by Laura M. Mateo:

A cross-curricular activity we are preparing is the use of these books “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” 1 and 2.

We are working with these books in all the bilingual subjects from the 1sto the 4thcourseof ESO.

As you know, in these books there are amazing stories of girls that are pioneers in something.

Each teacher looks  for one woman that has made something important related to the subject they teach(Technology, History, Biology, Physical Education or Physics and Chemistry), and with a copy of that page, we work during an hour each 2 weeks, with the language assistant. We start with the page of the book, and then, we look for more information about the womanin order to give materials to the students.

Then, they prepare a small presentation
As a final activity, we will prepare a presentationfor all the students,to celebrate the11thFebruary,International Day of Women and Girls in Science. For example, what I am doing now is working about the following women:

-1stcourse of ESO, Biology and Geology:

Silvia Earle, marine biologist
o Page of the book.                                                                                     oThis video: https://time.com/collection/firsts/4898567/sylvia-earle-firsts/

  Jill Tarterastronomer.
Page of the book.

-2nd and 3rdcourseof ESO, Physics and Chemistry

Margherita Hackastrophysicist.
oPage of the book.

Marie Curie, scientist.
oPage of the book.

This kind of activities are being very interesting for our students and they are looking forward to discovering women who have made history.By doing it in all the bilingual subjects, they are achieving information about an important number of women.

Ana Díez:

After watching the video the students should search for articles against and pro the fact that the reinfection of Covid 19 is possible. They have to explain their classmates the information they have found.

After that, they have to think if they meet someone who has been Covid 19 positive more than once and explain his or her experience.

Finally, they have to think about the rules we should follow to prevent the infection (or reinfection) and explain them to the rest of the class.

By Aurora del Álamo:
The students are scientists working for Bosque Verde.
They design and make chemicals like air fresheners and insect repellents, for companies like Mercadona.
To do this they need to know:
  • what substances are these products made from?
  • how do chemicals and smells spread?
  • how can these chemicals can be made into sprays?

 C for Cognitive
    Thinking processes

In this unit, above all with the final task, the students analyse the cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis.
Contrast the process of mitosis with the meiosis.
Identify the different phases of these processes.

Activities

Tasks

In pairs, make a playdough model of the meiosis.
The project consists in elaborate a timelapse of each phase of the meiosis. Each pair make a model of one phase, in this way, with the work of all the studentes of the class, they create the whole process of the meiosis.

C for Culture

Content: environmental impacts and environmental risks. We can connect this content of this unit with cultural aspects of our daily life as taking care of our environment. At the end of the day, the planet is our home, and if we do not take care of it, where is it suppose we are going to live?

Activities

Recycling workshop: the students bring to the classroom some waste in order to classify it in the correct way. Just in this case they will be able to do it well in their homes and to reduce the environmental impact that we produce every day.

Tasks

Recycling workshop, at a school level. The students make some posters to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and the importance of starting from our home and our high school.

Cross-curricular tasks
First Lego League.
This is a cross-curricular activity that is carry out by Science and  Educational technology.
This year, it consists in designing a gadget related with the fact of saving water. Then, the students have to present their project in a competition called First Lego League.
In this activity we can raise awareness about the importance of using water in a correct way and not wasting it. In this way, they can realise how important is take care of our planet and the sources it provides.
We also encourage certain values of social harmony like tolerance, respect and  coworking.
Finally, we can motivate our students to create something original, stimulating their creativity and opening their minds.

Resources and materials
